What is Pathfinder 1 Designed to Do?

Pathfinder 1 is LTA Research’s proof-of-concept aircraft that is demonstrating lighter-than-air technology, but what does “proof-of-concept” actually mean?

A Proof-of-Concept Aircraft

Proof-of-concept aircrafts are built to demonstrate that a certain design works before it moves to the next phase. These prototypes are intended to answer a variety of engineering-related questions:

  • Does everything perform as designed?
  • Does the vehicle respond as expected to flight control inputs?
  • How does the airship handle at different speeds, heights, loads, etc.?

Given that rigid airships haven’t been flying for nearly a century, these questions carry extra weight. Pathfinder 1 is our way of answering these important questions one by one.

The Purpose of Pathfinder 1

Pathfinder 1 is the first step in bringing back large-scale lighter-than-air flight. It was built to validate a modern take on the historic rigid airship design. Before developing larger aircraft intended for uses like humanitarian aid and sustainable travel, LTA needs to resolve these critical questions.

By participating in flights and undergoing testing, Pathfinder 1 is generating the data LTA needs to determine what we build next.

What Pathfinder 1 Tests

Here’s a deeper look into some examples of what Pathfinder 1 tests:

  • Structural performance: Evaluates how the internal structure withstands real flight loads and stress.
  • Propulsion and thrust: Assesses how effectively the 12 electric motors provide thrust and directional control.
  • Handling: Measures Pathfinder 1’s speed range, altitude capabilities, and maneuverability.
  • Onboard systems: Evaluates the performance of LiDAR and other sensors, along with the sustainable management and containment of helium.
  • Ground operations: Determines the staffing and procedures needed for safe, effective, and efficient operations.

What’s Next

Each test and data point from our flight program sharpens our understanding of what works and what to improve, guiding the future of the Pathfinder series. Pathfinder 1 is how we prove the concept.
